This is a great chance to get involved in planning for the Relay for Life (an American Cancer Society walk) coming up in the spring!

*** Note: Sorry if you're receiving this more than once! ***
Hey guys! The time's finally come to pick our Relay for Life Board in
preparation for our big event in the beginning of Mayish (the date hasn't
been set by the city of Cambridge yet).
Just to give you guys some background, Relay for Life is an annual
American Cancer Society event. Basically, it's an 18 hour overnight
cancer walk in which teams of about 10 members try to keep at least one
person on the team walking at any given point. In addition to being a
huge fundraiser, the national Relays for Life are also a means of
establishing a presence in the community, celebrating cancer survivorship,
and recruiting volunteers.
We, as Harvard students, get to help out with the Cambridge Relay for
Life, which usually takes place the first weekend in May. You can
personally participate to whatever degree you find suits you. You can
participate on the actual day of the event as a walker or as a team
captain, heading up a group of walkers (organizing a team, collecting
dues, etc.), help out with individual activities between now and then
(we'll keep you updated by e-mail about upcoming events), or be part of
the Relay board.
The Relay board will consist of 15 members (the 13 of you plus us) and
will hold board meetings once a week, planning fundraisers, publicity,
community contacts, etc. We'll pretty much be entirely responsible for
directing the Harvard community's participation in Relay in addition to
helping the city of Cambridge with whatever they need.
It's an awesome way to really get involved in a good cause and see a lot
of spirit, so we'd definitely recommend applying for a board position! If
you're interested, please e-mail gcwang@fas and smreddy@fas by Saturday,
November 13th by midnight answers to the following questions. If not, we'll
letyou know during the course of the year how else you can help out. Thanks
a lot guys!
1) Why do you want to be on the relay board?
2) Have you been involved in relay or another harvard cancer society
program before? If so, which ones? What roles did you play in them?
What other past experience do you have that would contribute to the board?
3) Please list your top three position choices, and explain why you like
each of them, and what you could contribute to the position.
4) Please detail, as specifically as possible, your availability for this
semester. Please keep in mind that due to the important nature of board
meetings, schedule flexibility may be a factor in choosing the relay 2005
board.
The possible board positions and descriptions:
Team Captains (1): you will be responsible, as we get closer to Relay, for
helping recruit team captains; being their point of contact with the rest
of the board; directing them in terms of collecting money, distributing
information, etc,
Publicity (3): We need 3 students to publicize the event on campus, to
businesses, and in hospitals/healthcare facilities in the area. You will
be working with the other positions to publicize fundraisers and other
activities leading up to the event as well.
Fundraising (2): Organizes and heads at least two major fundraising
projects prior to Relay. Last year, we had a club night at the Kong,
which raised over $900! We are very open to new ideas for this year as
well.
Survivorship (2): Contacts local hospitals, healthcare centers, and also
cancer survivors. Recruits survivors to participate in Relay. They give
us a face to fight for, and they are integral to what we do.
Logistics (2): The go-to people, when it comes to reserving rooms for
meetings, transporting equipment, food, etc. to and from Relay. And other
logistical issues.
School Liaison (3): Two liaisons will work on on-campus publicity.
Postering, working in conjunction with local groups to form teams, etc.
One liaison will work with representatives from other schools, in the same
capacity as the two on-campus liaisons.
Food Donations (1): Contacting local restaurants and food establishments
to get food donations and food gift certificates for the Relay event.
Treasurer (1): Will work on grant-writing (e.g., UC), and will be in
control of the checkbook.
Entertainment (1): Will contact local arts groups to perform at Relay, and
will also organize activities for the event (e.g., ping pong, volleyball,
etc.)
Remember, quality is more important than quantity...so good luck with your
apps and we hope to meet you all during the course of the year. We'll let
you know within a few days after the 12th. Tah tah!
Good luck!

Hello to all our Pie in the Sky Volunteers!
Thank you so much for helping out at the Box Party, Data Entry, and all
other Pie activities. Now that the pies are here Community Servings is
trying to capitalize on point of purchase pie sales. Luckily, we have
several pie selling sights in premium locations where we need outgoing pie
sellers at the following locations:
Filenes (corner of Summer and Washington Street)
This is an outside location complete with signs/posters and a cart for the
Pies.
11am-4pm
The Body Shop at the Prudential Center
8am-12pm
State Street Financial Center
2:30pm - 4:30pm
60 State Street
9am-11am
We are looking for help at any of the above locations. If you are unable to
be at the location for the whole shift that's fine. We are more than happy
to have even an hour of your time. If you are interested please call
Jennifer at 617.445.7777 ext 230. I will be in the office until 5pm today
11/23.
Thanks so much for all your dedication and support with Pie in the Sky.

Do you Yahoo!?
Meet the all-new My Yahoo! Try it today!
Two Thanksgiving-related announcements from Dudley Public Service:
1. HOMELESS MEALS PROGRAM THANKSGIVING DINNER
Friday, 11/26, 2:30-8PM
2. THANKSGIVING PIES
Place your order by tomorrow, 11/17
*****************************
1 HOMELESS MEALS PROGRAM. As Thanksgiving approaches, Dudley Public Service
would like to let you know we will be volunteering to serve a very special
Thanksgiving meal to the homeless the day after Thanksgiving, Friday 11/26, at
the Harvard Square Homeless Meals Program at Christ Church, Zero Garden Street.
This is a continuation of our regular volunteer commitment at the Homeless Meals
Program, which is ordinarily on Thursdays. (Be aware that the program is
cancelled on Thursday 11/25 itself) This Thanksgiving meal is also a great
chance to get an introduction to the program and its volunteers and guests.
Just like during the regular Thursday program, volunteers can come any time from
2:30-8PM. If you come earlier (before 5PM), you are most likely to help with
preparing the food, from 5 to 7 or so you are most likely to help with serving
and towards the end with cleaning up. Please feel free to come at any point and
for any amount of time you can spare.
We hope to see some of you next Friday, and please also keep in mind that
everyone is _always_ welcome to volunteer at the meals program on regular
Thursdays, including this Thursday, 11/18.
Questions? Please email us at dudleypublicservice(a)yahoo.com

2. THANKSGIVING PIES TO BENEFIT COMMUNITY SERVINGS
Dudley volunteers helped out at the kitchen last weekend at Community Servings,
Greater Bostons free, hot, home-delivered meals program for people living with
AIDS and their dependents and caregivers, 95 percent of whom live below the
poverty line. Pie in the Sky is Community Servings largest fundraiser and has
been dubbed the worlds greatest bake sale. Delicious apple, pumpkin, sweet
potato, pecan, and diabetic apple pies are donated by over 100 of Bostons best
restaurants. If you would like to order a delicious Pie in the Sky pie for your
familys holiday celebration (and make possible a very special Thanksgiving
meal for Community Servings clients), please visit www.pieinthesky.org and
place your order by tomorrow, 11/17. Its easy! Pies can be picked up on
Wednesday 11/24 right at Holyoke Center and dozens of other locations
throughout the greater Boston area.
Best holiday wishes from all of us,
Denise, Ernesto, and Maria

Dear Dudley Volunteers,
Just a reminder about our Pie in the Sky Box Party coming up next weekend on Saturday, November 13. Please RSVP for the party by replying to me at this address by tomorrow, November 5, by 2pm or so if possible. (This is because Community Servings would like a count and the names of our volunteers.)
Pie in the Sky is the worlds largest bake sale and is a fundraiser to benefit Community Servings, Greater Bostons free, hot, home-delivered meals program for people living with AIDS and their dependents and caregivers, 95 percent of whom live below the poverty line.
Dudley volunteers will help out with this major effort by constructing the boxes that will store thousands of mouth-watering, donated pies.
Well be meeting on the Dudley steps around 8:30AM on the 13th for breakfast before heading downtown (Community Servings has not yet confirmed the exact location, though it will be downtown rather than at their Roxbury location). We will be back by 12:30.
For more information about all the great work that Community Servings does, visit
